Pendennis Productions is a Bristol-based production company established to develop innovative drama for film and television. Original scripts, supported by soundtracks composed in-house, create a distinctive style; its projects explore a range of subjects across different genres. It has a goal to see ideas through from concept to completion, and in doing so be involved with the creative process throughout the project.
Pendennis Productions was founded by Owen Franklin, a Bristol-based filmmaker and musician. Owen read English Literature at the University of Durham and was awarded a BA (Hons) and MA (Dist).
Pendennis Productions focuses primarily on developing and producing feature films and television series.
Its debut feature-length production was a micro-budget pilot for She Moved Through The Fair, a psychological drama with supernatural undertones. The screenplay for this film was written by Owen Franklin whilst he was an undergraduate, the cast and crew were almost exclusively compiled from Bristol-based colleagues and professionals, and the film itself was shot in the city and surrounding area, showcasing both the significant local talent and the attractiveness of the South West as a destination for filmmaking.
Following encouraging feedback from an invited audience, the company is looking to progress She Moved Through The Fair either as a more resolved and refined version of the pilot, or as a mini-series exploring and developing further narrative arc's within the story's world.
Pendennis Productions has recently completed another feature film, Ruthless, which was shot on location in the Brecon Beacons and is a sly subversion of the infamous slasher genre. The talented upcoming cast is comprised of students and recent graduates from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, and the creative team was also sourced from Bristol and the South West.
The film is finished (subject to final minor audio and VFX adjustments) and the company is seeking distribution agreements for Ruthless in all territories.
Pendennis Productions has further projects in development: Diamonds In The Rough, a "whodunnit" drama that explores the fallout after the murder of a student in a prestigious university town; and Rockumentary, a comedy shot in "mockumentary" format following two hapless bandmates as they launch their latest niche scheme to break into the music industry. Both of these projects are currently seeking funding or co-production partnerships.

In addition to its original content, Pendennis Productions has worked with clients in the commercial, industrial and hospitality sectors, creating bespoke advertisement videos and soundtracks.
Moving image is an increasingly powerful marketing tool, and even the simplest short film on a company’s website can have an impact beyond the capabilities of a block of text and static images. Videos can provide an introduction to a company or concept. Pendennis Productions can compose original soundtracks to enhance the end product.
Previous clients (for both video editing and/or soundtrack composition) include Accessorize, Lombok and Amir Khan's Gloves Gym.
More recently, Owen has completed a significant commission in conjunction with Bristol Jazz & Blues Festival and internationally acclaimed saxophonist Andy Sheppard, creating an original cut of Fritz Lang's 1927 science fiction epic Metropolis that was premiered with a live original score at Bristol's Colston Hall in March 2017.
Composition and audio recording is a major element of Pendennis Productions’ activities. When planning any project, a relationship between the script/storyboard and the accompanying music is nurtured from the start, ensuring that the development of the score is an organic process that links directly to the action.
One project has been scoring the entirety of the full length film She Moved Through The Fair, which blended traditional Celtic influences and melodies with darker ambient pieces. You can view the film's opening scene here, with its original theme music underpinning it.
Additionally, Owen composed and recorded the film’s soundtrack and theme song. The theme song, ‘The Lover I Left Behind’, is being released as a single with accompanying music video and can be viewed here.
A full score for Ruthless was also composed, incorporating a diverse range of genres that centred around several key motifs. An example of the score - written for the protagonist, Ruth - can be viewed here.
As mentioned above, Pendennis Productions has also undertaken bespoke composing commissions for corporate clients. Recent examples include soundtracks for an Issey Miyake commercial and a short documentary about the Richard Burton cult thriller The Medusa Touch.
In addition to instrumental and soundtrack composition, Owen has been writing and recording his own music for several years. He has released three albums and an EP, as well as several self-directed music videos to accompany the singles. Two of these videos have been featured on the NME’s website.
Owen primarily works as a recording artist, but on occasion organises energetic live shows with full band arrangements. As well as writing material for his own voice, Owen is happy to work with singers and other musicians to create tracks for their own usage.
